In 1964 ART made a major change to their painting and lettering scheme. With the arrival of Downing Jenks as the new president of the Missouri Pacific and the Wabash being merged into the Norfolk and Western, ART changed their paint scheme from the traditional reefer yellow with boxcar red roof and ends and black underframe and trucks to reefer orange sides, ends and roof with black underframe and trucks. The heralds, which had been painted as simple black outlines since 1960 remained the same except the Wabash flag fell, being replaced with N&Ws circular herald.
These models represent cars upgraded with electric air-circulating fans. As pictured, the models are lettered with Missouri Pacific Lines buzzsaw emblems and Norfolk and Western"Hamburger" emblem applied to the right side of the door. On the leftside of the car, the MoPac emblem is closest to the "B" end and the Norfolk and Western "Hamburger" emblem closest to the door, while on the opposite side the locations are reversed. The ART shield was moved to the left of the door centered over the reporting marks and car number. Prototype cars were renumbered beginning ca. 1951 into the 32000 series for cars having Preco fans and the 33000 series for cars having Equipco fans.
These cars are fully assembled. We offer six road numbers, 32096, 32117, 32148, 33016,33307 and33429. To note the change in ownership of the N&W, on this set of models we lettered the cars with a reweigh location and date of XD 1-65, which was th eex-Wabash’s Decatur, Illinois facility. The build date is 1-41.
Compare the model to the prototype photo in the listing. These are the only HO-scale models in plasticthat accurately depict the ART steel reefer with the distinctive riveted lapseam. We even included ice platform supports on the roof that have never been modeled on any reefer except these gems from InterMountain. Note that the ARTs reefer orange is a bit difficult to capture in a photo, and these might seem abit “bright,” but the actual paint on the models is dead on, being matched byInterMountain using the Pantone Color Matching System.
Refer to the Missouri Pacific Historical Society’s Winter 2003 Eagle for history and photos of the cars.
